Who We are
If you could take a small step to save money and help the environment, would you?
We are a grass roots organization who wants to make the Owner's of AM broadcasting stations aware of the savings that can be incurred by signing off their transmitters overnight. Many of these owner's are having difficulty in this tough economy making ends meet, as are many other businesses. This represents a real way to save money and reduce energy use long term. No fancy alternative energy equipment is needed. Simply program the stations transmitter remote control or automation system to turn off the transmitter at midnight and turn it back on at 6am. This time frame can be adjusted to local conditions.
Why do we care? Because it seems a huge waste of energy to keep these stations on overnight when no one is listening. This action will result in real reductions in green house gases, acid rain causing sulfates, nitrates, heavy metals and other power plant emissions.
Stations that voluntarily take these steps will also go a long way in cleaning up the AM broadcast band overnight, which maybe will make the band more listenable. Keep in mind, we are only talking about signing off between midnight and 6am, the way stations used to.
Join the Cause
You can help by joining in. Listen to your local AM radio station(s) at night. If you don't know who or what your local stations are, check the FCC data base. If you find the signal is full of interference and pretty much unlistenable, call the radio station and direct them to this page (www.signitoff.org), they may thank you for it.
Donate!
We do not currently need donations. Right now, it is just a web site, however, if this idea takes hold, we may want to do a direct mail piece or some other form of mass mailing to radio stations to promote our cause. Check back from time to time to see how we are doing.
